Choosing the Right Grout

The purpose of grout is to help keep tile lines even, protect the edges of tile from wear and tear, and to seal moisture out of the substrate. Different tiles require different types of grout, depending on the size of the joint and the area where the tile is to be installed. The right grout choice can make a major difference not only in future stain problems, but also in the life of... the tiles.

Unsanded grout, smooth once dry, is a standard, cement-based material used with most wall tiles, and all tiles that have a straight, clean edge and a grout joint of 1/16 to 1/8 inch. It is almost always used with glass tile. Unsanded grout comes in a variety of colors, and can have sealers or latex added to it to boost protection from stains and wear.

Sanded grout is a cement-based product. Grains of sand are added for strength, and to help fill larger joints. Sanded grout is used with grout joints over 1/8 inch. It also comes in a wide range of colors, and can have sealers or latex added to it to boost protection from stains and wear.

Epoxy grout is known as being highly stain resistant. It is made with resins instead of water, and a two-part chemical process is used to create a thick, flexible grout that is naturally stain-resistant. Epoxy grout can be difficult to work with and install, but it is a good choice for wet areas or when tiles need additional flex.
