Of all the reasons I love to install hardwood floors, one of the top reasons is that they last forever. I’m installing flooring that will see generations pass through that home. And as a family man, myself, that is pure magic.

Hardwood floors last forever not just because of their durability, but because whenever the surface gets too worn by scratches and dents, it can be fixed with a sanding job and a hardwood refinish. And they really look like new again once the floor refinish is done…incredible.

Whether you’re in need of a deep refinish or just want to refresh your hardwood flooring or update the color of your stain, if it’s your first time doing a wood floor refinishing, you probably want a solid idea of what to expect. I’m going to break the process down into six steps to give you a high-level overview of what will be done.

And yes, I promise, it really is this simple.

  1. Hardwood floor refinishing consultation
At Valor Home Services, we start with a consultation with you in your home. We show you our stains and products and help you decide what will mesh with the style of your home. We also take a look at your floors to see what species of wood we’re dealing with.
  2. Sub-floor preparation
Next, we walk the floor to find squeaks and uneven seams. We fix those first before starting the hardwood refinishing process.
  3. Sanding
We then start the refinishing process by sanding the old layer of stain (or what’s left of it) down, also evening out the wood across the floor’s surface, correcting scratches and minor dents.
  4. Repair the bigger holes, gouges and dents
Whatever the previous sanding process doesn’t smooth out, we fix. This includes finding and filling cracks, gouges and the rest.
  5. Staining for hardwood floors
We then stain the hardwood with the stain of your choosing. We will first stain a patch of flooring so you can see and approve the product before we apply it across the floor.
  6. Applying finish
Once the stain is dry, we apply finish to your hardwood floor. You’ll choose the luster and gloss levels used for the exact shine you want.
